LANDLINE

This project explores nostalgia through the death of simple technology. Landline phones were an integral part of our society for so long and are now becoming obsolete with the growth of mobile personal phones and text based conversation.

As a child, I saw and used our landline phones every day. I was required to be physically connected to not only the phone, but the person on the other side, who was also stuck in an area of their home by their corded landline phone. I watched our “home phone” turn into my mom's Blackberry, and then turn again into a family of iPhones.

In the landline era, communication with far away peoples was dependent on corded phones, a voice to voice conversation that required human presence in one location. Now, with the growth of text based conversation, the way phones are viewed has drastically changed. Landline phones were an important part of community and conversation that has now become obsolete, and this project explores the nostalgia of landline phones and the various forms they existed in.
